NEWCASTLE COUNCIL SUPPORTS REMOVAL OF SHARK NETS

Newcastle Councillors voted 10-1 to support the removal of shark nets from Newcastles beaches in favor of using drones and drum lines.

Unfortunately for the foreseeable future shark nets will remain in place and continue to harm our oceans marine life, because shark mitigation is the responsibility of the NSW Government and not local council.

Newcastle Council will write to the NSW Government and express their opinions and plans for the future of shark mitigation in the region.

Wollongong council has also voted in favor of removing shark nets and using alternative methods.

The state government has tried various other mitigation measures over a five-year period as part of its recently signed $16 million shark management strategy, including the deployment of drones, helicopters, listening stations, and SMART drum lines.

How safe will you feel without shark nets?
