EXPERTS SAY AUSTRALIA DOES NOT NEED MORE GAS

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his Government would build a gas fired power station in the Hunter Valley if the private sector abandons the ageing Liddell coal power station, but experts say Australia does not need more gas.

New data out today shows that renewable energy provided six times more power than gas this summer with gas generation falling almost 40 percent compared to last summer.

Our existing gas power stations are struggling to compete with clean, reliable and affordable renewable energy and storage. Australia does not need any new gas,” Tim Baxter

This comes off the back of a shocker year for gas in 2020 while solar and wind had a record year despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Morrison government plans to build a 750 megawatt (MW) gas fired power station in the Hunter Valley, if gas is more expensive and more polluting than rewnables than why on earth does the government think solution is the best.

“Gas is a polluting and expensive fossil fuel that’s on the way out and has no role to play in our economic recovery. It’s driving up household power prices, and prices for our manufacturing industries, putting the sector at risk,” said Mr Baxter.

Was this idea just a political stunt, in an attempt to get AGL to commit to keep ageing power stations online for longer, gone wrong for Scott Morrison, or does he seriously believe gas is the solution?
