Driver claims he was sober after crashing into a safety bollard

On Tuesday evening (26 January) a Toyota Celica was observed by members of the public to collide with a safety bollard at Wallsend Plaza. Police attended a short time later and spoke with the driver who was breath tested, and despite claiming that he had not had anything to drink, returned a positive result.

The driver was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station for a breath analysis which returned a result of 0.081 (mid-range prescribed concentration of alcohol). Checks also showed the driver was disqualified from driving until February 2021.

The driver was charged with Driving Whilst Disqualified and Mid-Range PCA. He will appear in Newcastle Local Court in February.
