Widespread blackouts and trees down across the Hunter

The Hunter endured a day high temperatures of up to 39c today and ended in with a fast moving thunderstorm which has left many suburbs without powers and trees down across the Hunter.

Wind speeds of 146km were recorded at Nobbys Beach as the storm intensified as it moved closer to the coast.

Emergency services are responding to incidents right across the Hunter from Kurri Kurri to Port Stephens to assist with fallen trees.

Many suburbs in Newcastle have been left without power and the power authoritys are still investigating the causes and power may not return for some hours as crews work to clear fallen trees and repair damaged powerlines.
